Hazelnut Cultivation
The main activity of Can Burguès has always been agriculture, with 26 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of hazelnuts (Corylus Avellana), spread across various plots of different ages and varieties. Some fields have hazelnuts older than fifty years, while others were planted in 2017. Due to the aging of many trees, a renewal process has been initiated, involving the removal and replanting of the oldest trees with more productive varieties.
In 2004, we chose to convert to organic farming, also known as biological or ecological, with the aim of producing natural, high-quality, healthy, and flavorful products. After three years in the conversion period, we obtained our first harvest with organic certification from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2007. Approximately half of the hazelnuts are of the Negret variety.
For its flavor, the Negret variety is the most appreciated for consuming toasted, as an appetizer, and as a dessert. There are also other varieties that aid in pollination.
Organic farming does not use synthetic chemicals such as hormones, herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers. This way, it does not harm beneficial fauna and avoids risks to human health, as no residues are generated that can accumulate in the soil and fruits.
Organic farming does not work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and makes a rational and efficient use of resources and energy.
